ACADEMY starlet Tom Smith has spoken positively about the “very important” glimpses into life with the first team he’s had this season.
The attacking player has had a very busy season of it so far.
A regular across the Academy teams, he’s also featured as part of the U23s squad as well as twice being involved in the first team – coming on as a substitute in the FA Trophy defeat at Stockport County, and making the bench for last Tuesday night’s home league win against York City.
It’s proved to be a huge highlight for the talented teenager. He clearly took the latter involvement with the team well in his stride – he went on to start for the National League U19 Alliance team the following afternoon and netted a hat-trick!
The Academy YouTube channel recently caught up with him to discuss the progress.
He said: “It was a really good experience, especially in a winning environment as well.
“The [first team opportunities] are very important as it helps make you more mature.
“I’m very excited about getting on the bench and being part of the team.”
Tom isn’t alone in being involved with the first-team.
Those performing well on the pitch and in the classroom are often rewarded with the chance to train with the team, while the likes of Harry Higginson, Gabby Danko and Harry Stratford are just a few of the other youngsters to be named within a match day squad for John Eustace’s men.
