Harriers Ladies kept up their strong start to the new league season by sweeping aside unbeaten Sedgley & Gornal on Sunday.
The Reds have made good strides in the league and cup so far this season but faced the challenge of heading away from home to meet a Gornal outfit who’d won each of their previous six league matches to top the table.
The home side made a good beginning, too, as they took the lead in the first half. The goal sparked jubilant scenes of celebration, but Harriers kept their minds on the task and swiftly levelled through Amber Lawrence with 30 seconds to reach a score of a parity at the break, 1-1.
The second period would be decidedly one-way traffic as Harriers took control of the game, rocketing in a further four goals to firmly secure the victory.
Kirsty Roberts made it 2-1 with an audacious lob that went in off the post, while Alex Nicklin extended the lead from the penalty spot after being fouled in the area. Both players would go on to double their own tallies for the day, Nicklin’s second seeing a through ball from Chanelle Mason picked up superbly by the striker as she swivelled and finished tremendously. After the home side netted a second from the penalty spot, Roberts notched again to make it 5-2 with another distance drive.
Up next for Harriers is an away trip to Redditch Borough in the WFA County Cup this coming weekend.
