Reaction from Moss Lane...
MATT GARDINER was pleased with the professional performance that saw Harriers secure a play-off place by beating Altrincham 4-1 on Easter Monday.
Harriers strode into an early lead at Moss Lane thanks to James McQuilkin’s fine goal, only to be pegged back before the break.
But a ruthless second-half showing saw further goals added to the cause by Joe Ironside, Andre Brown and Manny Sonupe.
It sealed an ultimately comfortable and thoroughly-deserved victory for the team, the three points confirming their place in this season’s play-offs.
Looking back at the game following the final whistle, Gardiner had words of praise for the Robins who ensured Harriers needed to more than up their game after the break.
“We knew it was going to be tough and credit to Altrincham,” he said.
“They are already relegated but there are a lot of things they’re still looking at for next season and they made it very difficult.
“We had to go and take the game to them….at half time we tweaked a few things and credit to our players for carrying that out.
“They had to create their own tempo within the game as you can sense the atmosphere and what it was like today.
“I thought they were clinical, stuck to their guns and were very patient – it’s paid off in the end.
“We knew it was going to be a big week and now we prepare for Gainsborough; we’re really pleased with the result in the end and pleased for the players – right through from the goalkeeper to the front man.
“They have done very well today and I thought it was a very professional performance.”
Harriers are now set for the play-offs, but the season is far from over.
There are still two big games to play, starting with the upcoming weekend visit to Gainsborough Trinity.
Plenty of teams are still vying for positions within and outside the play-off shake-up, and results remain of huge performance.
Off the play-offs, Gardiner added: “It’s great that we’re there and we now just want to focus on the next performance.
“We’ll make sure everyone keeps their standards and you could see they did that today in the second half.
“We have got to make sure we finish has high as we can – Gainsborough is the next game and we’ll have to go and get a good performance and get a result”
