FANS: U's 3-4 Harriers
The Harriers fans Team made the short trip down the M40 to take on Oxford United for the second time this season at the weekend.
Having already beaten the U's once this term, it was the boys from Worcestershire who started brightly, lone striker John Wenham a handful for the ageing Oxford back line, as well as the pace of Mason and Jarvis on the wings.
It was Harriers who took the lead early in the game, a long throw from Nathan Fox was not dealt with properly, and fell to the last person the Oxford defence would have wanted to see on the ball, Ollie Sewell, who had no hesitation in drilling a rising shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net to give the Harriers a 1-0 lead.
The lead was doubled not long after; once again a long throw from Fox was flicked forward by Sewell and well shielded by Wenham allowing Ben Grazier space to fire a effort into the net to make it 2-0. On the half hour changes were made and Oxford started to gain more possession, it was therefore not a surprise when the men in yellow pulled one back, a midfielder found himself free on the edge of the box and had time to pull the trigger un-challenged and Dave Ackerley in the Kidderminster goal could do little as it found the corner of the net.
The second half started poorly for the Harriers, a deep Oxford corner was won by a yellow head with the ball flying back across goal, unfortunately, Mark Connolly got himself into a muddle and ended up nutmegging Rob Hart on the line who was clearly disappointed as he was doing such a good job holding that post! John Wenham was also unlucky to see a shot come back off the bar, after dipping into midfield, the striker pulled the trigger from 25 yards and was unfortunate to see it come back off the woodwork with the keeper well and truly beaten
With Half an hour to go, Mark Young was bought back on to the pitch to give the midfield some bite and energy, Harriers had also held back Jon Smith this long, perhaps manager Connolly wanted to give Oxford a chance before bringing on there attacking protégé? Anyway, the move had the desired affect, with the Oxford defence focusing on Smith, they allowed Young to much space who fed the ball to Chris Lacey, who still had work to do bringing the ball in from 30 yards before finally placing the ball past the keeper. The result was put to beyond two minutes later, when the same combination saw Lacey bursting through, this time nonchalantly lobbing the keeper with a real touch of class finish.
Oxford did pull one back, the ref deciding to overrule a very aggrieved lino, but it made little difference to the result, as this was the last kick of the match. Harriers perhaps deserved the victory in terms of chances, but Oxford had a 20 minute spell before and after half time of real commitment which saw them claw there way back into the game, Once again, a high scoring affair finishing 4-3, with Kidderminster's Mark Young given the man of the match award.
