BOARDROOM: September Update

Posted on: Mon 28 Sep 2009

Only on your official website, harriers.co.uk, will you find exclusive in-depth monthly reports from the Boardroom at Aggbroough and on Monday afternoon Barry Norgrove sat down with us.

The Chairman gave us thoughts on how Mark Yates' team is shaping up with the second month of the season almost done and dusted, as well as looking back on September's other news.

Norgrove admits he's relatively happy with how things are shaping up at Aggborough - the team remain just a couple of wins away from the business point of the League table ahead of tomorrow's home clash with Wrexham.

Although 'silly' mistakes are arguably the only thing preventing Harriers from being around second place in the standings, Norgrove states he's very much looking forward to seeing how the likes of fully-fit Robbie Matthews blends into the team picture.

"Things are going reasonably well and you have to be relatively pleased," he said. "Hopefully it will continue to get even better.

"At the moment we're just letting in some silly goals which is probably the only difference between us being in a good position and us being in an average position.

"I know Mark will continue to work the players through these on the training ground.

"That said, it's been a bit difficult for Mark because we've had a couple of players out of the team injured that we'd like to see playing.

"Robbie Matthew had been out for a number of weeks before coming back on Saturday and he now looks fit and ready to go.

"He'll fit in nicely and I'm sure we will see things start to happen soon.

"To be honest, if you put aside a few of the errors we've made and it's clear to see whereabouts we'd be in the table.

"We're not losing games because we're a poor side and I think we're definitely good enough to put a good streak together to keep ourselves in touch."

September's big news was the donation to the Blue Square Premier of £1 Million from the Premier League.

Harriers are set to scoop £30,000 in the near future from this windfall. Whilst it's some way away from the £80,000+ that the club lost out on through the fall of Setanta, it's certainly going to make a difference.

And whilst Norgrove was some way away from ungrateful for the donation, he did insist that he feels only fair that Blue Square Premier clubs were assisted in some way following the broadcaster's collapse.

"We're going back towards June now and the AGM where Setanta went," he recalls.

"At the end of the day it was the Premier League who did that to them - they called in their £36 Million and [Setanta] couldn't afford to pay it - that was the end of that.

"But the Premier League had someone lined up to snap up their TV coverage right away and in a flash, whereas the Blue Square Premier didn't.

"The Charimen of clubs in the Conference had a few harsh words for the committee at the AGM and said that it wasn't right and that we wanted some pressure put on the League to get a share of some of the spoils.

"In the end it came up trumps, which we as Chairmen are pleased about because it's come from us.

"It doesn't replace Setanta in any way because we lost a lot of money from that but it is nice to have got something - when it does arrive."

With an early-season average of 1,371 at Aggborough, gates remain low for home matches and this is a source of disappointment for the Chairman who is upbeat about the team's start to the season.

The likes of Wrexham, Luton and Oxford are all set to help boost those figures with strong away followings over the near future, with the FA Cup also set to get underway in October.

So there are chances ahead for the coffers to be further boosted, and Norgrove is hopeful that as the team continues to progress, the support continues to swell.

"At the moment the gates are disappointing which is unfortunate because we really don't think we've had too bad a start at all," he went on to say.

"We just want the town behind us because for every gate we get that is below what we budget for, we have to eat into the monies such as what we're expecting now from the Premier League.

"We're certainly behind for the first few months of the season and we're just hoping it picks up.

"The Cup runs are going to be absolutely vital for us - we'd love the bonus of good Trophy and Cup runs because you can't budget for them. Sometimes you'll get knocked out in the first stage whereas on occasion you can go through like we did last season.

"We've got some very big Conference games coming up at Aggborough, too and hopefully that can boost the numbers.

Should the club continue to struggle, Norgrove admits that they will have to look at other ways to further cut costs to balance the books accordingly.

This needn't be as drastic action as the term 'cost cutting' implies in both football and all other industry - with Norgrove going on to explain that there are a number of ways where a saving can be achieved.

He stated that the Board will shortly be looking into the way Aggborough Stadium operates on a match day, for instance, though not every decision is theirs to make.

"Football will always be the same; clubs will always struggle for finances," he continued.

"There are ways in which we can cut back. For example, if you aren't full in the bars on a match day or busy in the Suite with functions then you don't need to get extra staff in to cover such things, and it works the same way for a match.

"We'd love the ground to be full at 6,400 every week but if we're seeing 1,200 crowds then obviously we can look at how the ground operates, it's has to be proportionate.

"We're looking at the away support aspect - recent events have meant we're reviewing that again now, and there are little ways like that where clubs can save.

"The safety certificate here can make things a little tricky but it's all about proving to people that you're right, though the safety of supporter is always going to come first.

"It's all about doing as well as we can for as long as we can and we're always looking into these things."
