NORGROVE: Monthly Report

Posted on: Wed 02 Dec 2009

It's that time again and once more your official website is here with a monthly report from the Boardroom as we sat down with Chairman Barry Norgrove.

Much of the talk over the last week or so has been the move to Luton of Matthew Barnes-Homer - we released the thoughts of both Norgrove and boss Mark Yates within minutes of the deal becoming official, click the respective links above to review those.

Reflecting back on the month of November since we last sat down to talk in depth, the Chairman repeated his vow that he will look to support Yates with funds in the January transfer window should the club still be right in the thick of the play-off picture.

Despite just taking a point from two home games over the course of the last few days, Harriers remain just a stones-throw away from the top five.

Later, Norgrove goes on to talk openly about the importance to the club of raising needed revenue through the sale of players on occasion, though on the flip-side, it's clear the Board are happy to put money where their mouth is so long as the team are doing the business on the pitch.

"We're always hovering just outside the play-offs and that is fantastic for us," he said.

"It would be nice to keep that going and make a dart for it late on and surprise a few people.

"As we did last year, we'll look at where we are in January and review the situation to see if we can help Mark.

"That is the main thing and that is what we want, to be around there in the New Year and just look to hold our own."

Harriers are set to net five figures in January when Barnes-Homer's deal to Luton becomes permanent - Norgrove explained at the time of the deal that the club's need was not great enough to necessitate the transfer, though as always it's clear that such funds are beyond vital to us in the long term.

Barnes-Homer, though able to join Luton via a clause in his Aggborough contract, joined the likes of Iyseden Christie and James Constable in departing the club mid-season over the last few years.

The fact that such deals are a blow to the southern regions of the manager aren't lost on the Chairman, who openly concedes he's had to make life hard for Yates at times.

"Things are difficult for him at times but we proved last year that if we're in that good position then we're prepared to support another push at it."

Harriers Chairman Barry Norgrove speaking to harriers.co.uk:

He revealed his admiration for the gaffer, though, and stressed that such dealings in the wake of falling gates over the last three or four seasons and surrounding economy has helped keep Kidderminster Harriers running.

"I've pulled the rug from underneath Mark's feet a number of times now and he has always come back and built well," he added.

"It is the only way we can move with the club and I can't promise that this will be the last. It's a great credit to Mark because when someone gives you that kind of set-back it isn't always easy to dust yourself off and keep going.

"He does the best he can and accepts the conditions that we're all working under and he's always got on with the job and that is fantastic, I have great admiration for him for that because many managers wouldn't be able to deal with it.

"Ever since we've been here it's something we've had to do - even before Mark came on board.

"In one sense I suppose it is good business but I know it doesn't make things easy. So many football clubs are struggling at the moment and we don't want to end up in a situation like one or two are in this League and below.

"It's tough but it's something we've had to do because we don't have a billionaire around the corner just waiting to throw money at us. We've always operated on the breadline - supporters are finding it hard with the recession and it's hitting the game now because gates are down everywhere - it is certainly harder for people this year than it was 12 months ago.

"Our club has never and will never sustain itself on the money we take through the gate so sometimes we have to do these things to ensure we can keep going. "

Harriers could be dealt a further blow ahead of the festive season - a bumper gate for the traditional Boxing Day fixture hangs in the balance - crisis club Chester City are due to provide the opposition, though they face the most uncertain of futures.

"Traditionally Boxing Day has always been a big game for us and aside from that we don't have another game until the middle of January so of course that's something that concerns us," Norgrove went on to say.

"I've put a phone call into the League this morning and I'm waiting for a response. We're trying to make them aware of just how important it is for us to be able to count on that big Christmas crowd.

"It's alright for the rest of the clubs who have a game on Boxing Day but we could end up as the only team in the whole League without one."

"No team can turn from good to bad overnight and that is just the game..."

Harriers Chairman Barry Norgrove speaking to harriers.co.uk

The last month has seen good and bad on the pitch for Harriers - epic wins over the likes of Oxford and Kettering, along with the disappointment of the weekend defeat to AFC Wimbledon and last night's goalless draw with Tamworth.

Norgrove remains philosophical, saying: "That's not us, that's just football sometimes. We've had some fantastic games and beaten some really good teams and just lately we've had a couple of performances that haven't been as good.

"Every team has a blip and there are many teams above us who haven't come close to having theirs yet so we aren't too worried.

"No team can turn from good to bad overnight and that is just the game - we're looking to come back into form now and make sure that gap is kept nice and tight."
