BOARDROOM: Chairman's Update

Posted on: Wed 28 Jul 2010

Barry Norgrove is backing boss Steve Burr to produce a team Kidderminster Harriers fans can be proud of in the Chairman's latest interview with your official website, just over two weeks before the start of the new campaign.

It has been a long summer at Aggborough as Norgrove, the Board and indeed Burr and his management staff have wheeled, dealed, chopped and changed to ensure everything is gearing up nicely ahead of the big kick-off at York City on August 14.

Speaking to harriers.co.uk, Norgrove is immensely proud of his manager and the work done thus far this closed season to ensure the class of 2010/11 is one that can compete.

From youngsters simply 'desperate' to impress the Aggborough faithful, to the seasoned pros looking to bring some grit and experience to the outfit, the Chairman feels it is clear to see just what fans will get for their money this campaign.

"We've got a lovely club here - a fantastic stadium and the manager we want, and hopefully now he can be successful," he commented.

"He won't be working with the biggest budget in the League but we all have confidence in him and this is why we brought him here.

"He will be bringing young players through, some have come into the frame in pre-season and I think the fans are excited by what they've seen.

"More than a couple of the lads we have signed up were wanted by other clubs so this is a fantastic start for us.

"I know for a fact that Steve is working them hard and there will be nothing less than 100% from them this season because all they want is to play football for Kidderminster - they're desperate to play.

"We have a few older heads in there like Mark Albrighton, John Finnigan and Chris McPhee so with that blend we've got, we're confident we can compete.

"What we have to spend is what we have to spend and I will not go over that - I have always said that I would hate to put the club in any danger, but for what we've got I think Steve is putting something together that the supporters can be proud of and I really hope they will back him."

Harriers have enjoyed a relatively good time of it on the transfer front this summer - from experienced pros like new skipper Keith Briggs and one of last season's Championship winners Mark Albrighton, to England C Internationals Lee Vaughan and Tom Shaw, boss Burr has been putting his connections to good use.

And Norgrove stated clearly that it is virtually the presence of Burr alone that has swung many a deal in the club's favour - cue further plaudits for the man at the helm.

He continued: "I've known Steve for years now and like anyone who has been around him, I know for sure that you'll never find him down in the dumps or miserable.

"He is one of those people who have a real bubble about them. He bounces back from set-backs and keeps on running regardless - his upbeat way has really lifted the club and he deserves to do well here.

"Hopefully that will reflect on to the players on the park; so many have said that they were willing to come to Kidderminster over other clubs because of the respect they have for Steve and his reputation in the game.

"It is very much through our manager that so many of them have come here - for sure they would have gone somewhere else, but Steve got in there early and it just shows you what he is all about."

After the start at York on the 14th it is back to Aggborough for two home games in quick succession to kick-start the new Aggborough campaign as Southport and Mansfield visit respectively.

The surface here is close to perfect whilst all other manner of improvements are being made by those giving up their free time to help the club.

Norgrove was at great pains to thank each and every one of them, adding: "I just want to say that we have some fantastic people here who work in and around the ground on a match day and during the week as volunteers.

"We thank them for their time and their effort - it really, really is appreciated by the Board, the staff and everyone here.

"So many people have worked hard over the summer and will do again over the course of the season and they are valued so highly."

Away from football, the subject of investment is never too far away from the Chairman's mind.

The current state of affairs is similar to how you'd find it on almost any given day for Norgrove, as he and Vice Chairman Neil Savery lead the charge to further boost the Boardroom.

Current discussions are on going and although he understandably is forced to remain tight-lipped when it comes to specifics, he remains focused on his goal of bringing more bodies to the table.

"I have got several people who we're talking to and various parties have been involved over the last few months," he went on to say.

"Talks are still ongoing with them and we are ironing things out but until you have them on Board and they have signed on the dotted line there is not too much more you can say, but we are working on it.

"We are looking at getting a few more in with us to help with investment and if we can do that it is a domino effect across the club and all areas benefit.

"Without the big announcements and stories that come when new investment is in place, it is difficult to make clear just how much effort we're putting into the process to make it happen.

"We're travelling up and down the country each and every week and it is difficult but I can assure supporters, absolutely, that we are working hard.

"We are doing our upmost to bring investment into Kidderminster Harriers because the club is our top priority and we'll do anything for it."
