Gavin Hurren is already chomping at the bit to get going for the new season and is already hard at work preparing for pre-season in July.

The popular midfielder was one of many faces from last season to have signed brand new terms for the new Blue Square Premier campaign.

After taking a brief holiday, though, it seems that boredom is already setting in for 'Trigger' who is getting ready for action.

He told harriers.co.uk today: "It's nice to have a holiday but I was missing it after about a week!

"We've had a few weeks off now and after having a total rest I'm thinking about pre-season now.

"The gaffer said to keep in shape over the summer and I'm already working in the gym, I want to come back fitter and stronger in July.

"Personally I need to build-up my leg and back muscles and be a lot fitter all-round, I am fit but I want to be fitter."

13 faces in the Harriers squad were on the books at Aggborough last season with continuity and consistency frequently a long-term goal for boss Mark Yates.

To that end, Hurren continued: "If you look at all the good sides, they don't tend to gel over just one season.

"All of the good sides have made progress over the course of a couple of seasons - we had a great run last year and with a lot of the same players in the dressing room there's no reason why we can't do even better this season."

Harriers have a tough pre-season schedule of training and matches which gets underway early next month - seven warm-up fixtures have been arranged to get the squad in prime condition ahead of the new league term.

Afternoons at the likes of Rushall and AFC Telford will be anything but a cruise in the sunshine for the new squad, but it's not a thought that strikes much fear into former Nottingham Forest man Hurren.

He added: "Playing teams like that is going to be very tough physically; they are also going to want to be getting things from these games, finding out new ways of playing and everything so it's going to be a good work-out.

"It's all about fitness and what we can get out of these games. Match fitness is invaluable and the confidence we get from playing with each other will mean we can go straight into it in August.

"It's always nice to have a good start to the season - last season for instance, had we won a few more games at the start maybe we could have gone even further?

"I can't see why we can't have a good start - I'm already raring to go!"

The new league season gets underway on Saturday August 11. It may be a week or two more before Harriers no who they're playing and where they're going, but Hurren stated:

"It would be nice to play at home but I'm not too fussed.

"It's just important that wherever we're playing and whoever we're playing, we put in a good performance and try and get a result."
