BOSS: Yates' Weekend Thoughts

Posted on: Mon 13 Jul 2009

Mark Yates kept your official website up to date by sitting down this afternoon to give his latest thoughts on pre-season so far.

A 14-0 win at Bromyard on Friday was followed by a 3-0 success over at Bewdley Town on Saturday afternoon.

The two encounters were certainly different - as the score would suggest, Friday showed Harriers in full attacking flow whilst a more physical encounter saw the boys edge out Bewdley down at Ribbesford Meadow.

"They were good work-outs and both were different games," concurred boss Yates.

"The first one was on a good pitch, we were comfortable and I was pleased with how the lads passed the ball around and created chances.

"Bewdley on Saturday was on a difficult pitch and it was a different sort of match but still a good test for us. That's what we'd hoped for, fitness work is what is important and we've had a good chance to look at a few players.

"It wasn't a pretty game but in our league you aren't going to get pretty games all the time, either.

Players have to adapt to different situations - there were some pleasing things and some thing where you thought 'Well I'm glad it's happening now'. But that is exactly what pre-season is all about."

Pre-season is now in full flow - daily training sessions as well as matches. So has new physio Gavin Crowe been too busy with many knocks and niggles?

Yates added: "Martin Riley had a bit of a stiff back on Saturday but it's not really anything serious.

"He did some running and exercise rather than us risking playing him, so touch wood, we're fine."

Yates and his assistant Neil Howarth turned out for a Cheltenham Town legends 'Class of '99' squad on Sunday afternoon as they took on a supporters XI in aid of Kidney research UK - and a great time was had by all for what is a special cause.

"It was very good and very enjoyable. It was great to see some old team mates and some people we haven't seen in a long while," continued the manager.

"It was great for everyone to get together and it was for a good cause - Neil played the first half and I played the second and it was a nice afternoon."
