BIGNOT: 'It Just Felt Right'

Posted on: Thu 18 Feb 2010

In a great interview with harriers.co.uk, returning defender Marcus Bignot has admitted that coming back to Aggborough Stadium some 13 years after his departure 'just felt right.'

35 year-old Bignot was one of the stars of the club's 1996/1997 season, making a whopping 56 appearances before moving for major money to Crewe Alexandra where he was once more a massive hit.

Since then he's Captained QPR and featured for a whole host of the Football League's biggest names.

Now, though, he is back where it arguably all kicked-off.

"Kiddy gave me the opportunity to get into the professional game and this is me just putting a little bit back now," he told us.

"It is as simple as that - very rarely do you get the chance to put something back into a club that has been good to you, and this club has definitely been good to me and I'll never forget that.

"For me it is a goodwill gesture, and who knows where it will go? Rest assured, the fans know me and they know what I'm about and they know what I can bring to the table.

"It just felt right coming back here until the end of the season to help out on and off the pitch."

Only a phenomenal charge from Macclesfield Town stopped Harriers winning promotion in the campaign Bignot first spent at Aggborough.

Whilst he wouldn't have had his career unfold in any other way, the full-back admits that not making it to the Football League in a Kidderminster shirt still wrangles with him a little.

"It was a very memorable season for me here and one of my biggest regrets is not winning promotion with Kidderminster," he continued.

"I honestly thought we were the best team in that League but Macclesfield put in an unbelievable late run that season.

"Looking back on my career I've had a lot of highs but one of my biggest gripes was not getting promotion here, but I was delighted that the club achieved it a few years later.

"Graham Allner gave me the chance to play my football and at a time when a lot of clubs would stop you moving on, that was never the case here and when Crewe showed an interest they kept me informed.

"I'll be ever-grateful to the club because it was the catalyst for my professional career."

He was Player of the Season in his first campaign at Crewe as his career was further shaped by Dario Gradi, one of the game's most respected minds.

From there he continued to work with big-name bosses, and he's soaked up experience from wherever he's been. Some left a bigger impression on him than others, however.

He went on to say: "I've had some big managers and some big characters - my three years at Crewe were fantastic and I'll never forget them but the biggest character was definitely Ian Holloway.

"I played most of my games under him and he signed me three times during my career.

"As a man-manager, as a person, he was absolutely superb - and you have to look at John Gregory who took my QPR career on to another level.

"I've been lucky and I've been fortunate and every club I've been at I have had good managers and a good rapport with the supporters."

So now Bignot is once again a Kidderminster player, what can we expect?

The man himself admits his career has now somewhat come full-circle, but he seems some way away from ready to hang up his boots just yet.

"You speak to people and they all say 'you should play as long as possible', but I don't want to do myself an injustice," he insisted.

"I don't want to be a 'he was a good player', but I am also confident and know that I would not have signed here if I didn't think I could do a job.

"I respect that I won't be walking in and playing games because the lads have done well since the gaffer has come in.

"I'm more mature and won't be knocking on the manager's door if I don't feature on Saturday - in fact I'm not expecting to feature.

"I want to pass on whatever experience I can and do my best off the pitch and if I get the chance on the pitch then that's great - I'm equally as happy."
