BURR: Latest from the Gaffer

Posted on: Fri 11 Jun 2010

Boss Steve Burr has said he's close to establishing the nucleus of his new Kidderminster Harriers side following the addition of another player earlier today.

23 year-old utility player Tom Shaw became the latest player to commit to the new season at Aggborough by penning a one-year deal.

The former Tamworth man has joined the likes of Keith Briggs, Lee Vaughan and Danny Lewis in the 2010/11 squad which already boasts the likes of Chris McPhee, John Finnigan and Jack Byrne.

Harriers are now well into double figures when it comes to contracted to players - not a bad summer's work so far when you consider many a past pre-season when the start of training has seen just a few on board.

Speaking to the official website this afternoon, Burr admits he's happy enough with his closed season haul to date.

Some targets missed, some hit - but regardless, he's adamant that those he has been able to secure will come with one thing in common; hunger.

"At this stage of the summer leading into pre-season, we're looking at the nucleus in what we have and now we're aiming to add to it," he told harriers.co.uk.

"We have players that we have our eye on and we have obviously also invited players to come and train with us at the start of pre-season.

"We've asked around ten to come in so we can have a look at them and from that crop you would hope that at least one or two would come through.

"Working with a squad of 20 players would be ideal really but I think with what we have, we need to look at 18 as a closer number.

"But what we do have is value for money and all of those who have come in are young and very hungry to do well for us. That, from my point of view is important."

The Aggborough chief went on to add: "It can be frustrating for supporters because they want to see big names coming in and that is understandable, but at this moment in time we just aren't in a position to splash out.

"Sometimes [established names] just do not work out and that is why Gary and I are so keen to look for players who are eager to make an impression and do well for themselves and the football club, and appreciate being at a great club like this."

Meanwhile, Burr confirmed he is in talks with another goalkeeper as he looks to bring in another stopper to compete with Lewis for the number one spot at the club.

There has been one blow for the manager this week as The FA confirmed that new signing Lee Vaughan will have to sit out the first few games of the new term.

Former AFC Telford man Vaughan is suspended for four first-team games - a three-match ban for the accumulation of 15 yellow cards last term must still be served, as will a further one game suspension after the player was found guilty of FA Rule E3 following an incident whilst at Telford.
