BURR: We'll Be Ready

Posted on: Thu 12 Aug 2010

Boss Steve Burr insists Harriers will be ready for York City this weekend as the brand new Blue Square Bet Premier finally gets underway.

It has been a long summer for Burr and his management staff with a huge turnover of players as the gaffer seeks to assemble a squad he feels is fit to go to battle in non-league's top tier.

With no more than hours to go until things kick-off, the manager has told your official website that his troops are well prepared for what awaits them.

Brushing aside comments he's picked up over the course of this week, he maintains his camp is in order - he's now just ready to get down to business after a closed-season of graft.

"I've read this week about players being messed about... nobody has been messed about at this football club," he stressed to harriers.co.uk.

"The reality of it is that we have had to put a squad of players together that the club can afford and that is exactly what we've done.

"I'm not too bothered about comments that have been made but sometimes players think the game owes them a living and one or two have had a reality check this summer.

"But we'll get on with things - we've worked hard this week and we've watched York a lot over the last three weeks and we'll be ready.

"It doesn't take money to be prepared or professional."

Burr concedes the summer has gone a little better than he initially expected it might.

He has given the highest appraisal yet of his new team, tipping a fine blend of youth and experience to make big waves this term.

Far away from making bullish predictions about end of season achievements - he just feels he has a group of boys ready to shine - even if it gets them noticed.

"I must admit I was a bit concerned at the start of the summer as when you have to scrap almost an entire squad and build from scratch, there are certain worries you have.

"We know it is going to be a tough season for us but at the end of the day, the players we have brought together have been an absolute delight - I'm really pleased with how they have come together as a team and as a group.

"How well we will do, I don't know - and I never make predictions on how well we'll do, but York will be a good test for us.

"I think the supporters have seen already how hard the players have been working in the friendly games and I know we have a group of players here who will work hard and compete.

"I'd go as far as to say that if we have this group of players together at the end of the season, we'll have done tremendously well, there's absolutely no question about that.

"From what I have seen already there is a great chance that a number of these lads will progress and, as young players, I'm very happy with the way they're shaping up."
