After personnel changes secured Harriers their first home point of the season on Monday, boss Steve Burr admits that there will be more to come in future fixtures as he looks to strike his perfect formula.
With just one win in the bag so far this term it has not been an ideal start in terms of results for the club.
But with injuries, suspensions, and a large amount of officials' decisions adding to the issue from the first game to the most recent one, Burr admits that the cause has hardly been helped.
He agrees that he's yet to see his side hit full flow - though for their part, all the players can do is continue to show the kind of battling quality that saw them grab a draw from the jaws of defeat against Tamworth.
Speaking to harriers.co.uk today, Burr said: "It has been very frustrating for us because a lot of things have gone against us in the games we've played so far this season.
"But as a team, we are still not functioning in the way I really want and as I'd expect us to play - it has very much been in fits and starts.
"Of course some of that is going to be down to confidence and certainly the nature of some of the decisions we saw on Monday don't help, but it is how you respond to that.
"I felt from being a man down, the lads showed great character on Monday and thoroughly deserved to get something from the game but they have to keep showing that."
Injury to Tom Sharpe and suspension to Mark Albrighton left the gaffer with just one fit out-and-out central defender in the shape of Michael Briscoe going into yesterday's transfer deadline.
So it stands to reason that he swooped to bring in Ollie Thorne from Newport County as a boost to the back.
Burr applauded the defensive performance of Chris McPhee against Tamworth as he again filled in as a makeshift centre-back against the Lambs.
Though it's clear the manager still has the former Ebbsfleet man's versatility in mind and is keen to discover just where he is happiest and most comfortable.
After arriving at Aggborough originally in early 2009, he excelled in a midfield role, whilst his attacking efforts in this season's opener have whetted Burr's appetite further.
From front to back there is plenty to ponder, then - but Burr remains typically positive, adding: "As a squad we still feel we are very close to something and that is a much better position to be in than having to think 'there is absolutely nothing here'.
"It's up to myself, Gary and the rest of the club to keep on working as we have been doing.
"We have moved things around - sometimes because we've had to but also because we're still trying to strike upon the right sort of balance.
"I've made mistakes in games but that is something that is very easy to say in hindsight and at the end of the day, systems won't win you matches, players always will.
"We're without Mark Albrighton for Saturday now and Tom Sharpe has had no luck whatsoever so far this season; he took an almighty bang at the weekend and we are going to have to see how he is for Altrincham.
"Ollie coming in gives us that extra option and we have Chris McPhee to think about as well, who I though was excellent for us on Monday.
"He is someone who will give you 100% he's played, but looking back at the York game, you have to say that he linked up with Lee Morris tremendously well and caused them all sorts of problems.
"We are really keen to try and get the best of out of him, wherever on the park that might be.
"I have had a chat with Chris and even he has said that by his own admission he isn't playing with the freedom he has done and in as settled a way as he has done previously and that is something we're going to look at with him."
