Posted on: Fri 18 Feb 2005

'TWO out of three 'aint bad' - that's the message from Harriers boss Stuart Watkiss as he prepares to bring to an end another week of wheeling and dealing in the transfer market.

New signing Mark Jackson looks set to become the 40th player to pull on a red shirt this season as he prepares to make his debut at Shrewsbury tomorrow, whilst another could follow in quick succession.

However plans to add a third new face have fallen through.

"I had plans at the beginning of the week to go out and get a central defender, a central midfielder and a centre forward," Watkiss said.

"Well I've managed to get the defender, I'm hopeful the forward I've enquired about could be here in time for Tuesday's game but unfortunately the deal for the midfielder I wanted fell through."

Watkiss explained further.

"I had agreed in principle for a player exchange for with another League Two club. The deal was that they could have one of my players - a defender - in exchange for one of their midfielders.

"Unfortunately our player wasn't interested in the move there which was disappointing from a selfish point of view because, as a result of this, the deal couldn't be completed we are now back to square one."

We aren't scoring enough goals and I want more competition for places in every position...

Watkiss refused to be drawn on the identity of the striker, but explained why he has made moves to bring in another attacker.

"Gary Birch is struggling with his fitness and needs an operation. Iyseden (Christie) is knocking on the door again but it will take him a number of games to get himself properly match fit.

"We aren't scoring enough goals and I want more competition for places in every position .

"We are in advanced negotiations with this player and hopefully, if we can push the deal through, he may be available for the Bristol Rovers game."
