PREVIEW: Stevenage v Harriers

Posted on: Fri 19 Mar 2010

It will be a case of 'some stay, some go' for Harriers tomorrow, as they head for Stevenage and the second leg of the FA Carlsberg Trophy semi-final needing to make at least two changes to the side that played at Luton in midweek.

Steve Burr was impressed with the performances of all of those who came in at Kenilworth Road, and it looks likely that scorer James Lawrie and central defender Tom Sharpe are in strong contention to keep hold of their places.

Front man Robbie Matthews will also want to stay in the eleven after starting in midweek, though Darryl Knights is waiting in the wings after coming on as a sub and Adam Boyes could well be fit enough to feature after taking a knock prior to the Hatters' tie.

Whilst the boss has headaches with the above, he will lose the services of both winger Marc Goodfellow and midfielder Jack Byrne, who are both Cup tied after outings earlier in the competition for Barrow and Redditch United respectively.

Midfield pair Dean Bennett and John Finnigan are unlikely to be involved - both continue to struggle with injuries and were absent in midweek. Gavin Caines (Achilles) will not be rushed back with Sharpe ready to deputise once more.

Speaking ahead of the second leg, Burr concedes that a mighty challenge awaits his players if they are to topple Stevenage emphatically enough to stop them from going to Wembley at Harriers' expense.

5-1 down from the first leg thanks to 'self-inflicted' woes last weekend, the men from Aggborough travel to the Lamex knowing they'll need to make a little piece of history.

But the manager remains far from defeatist. Stranger things have - and do - happen in the game, after all. For him however it's clear the initial demand is to win Saturday's game.

"It's going to be a mammoth task," said Burr, of overall progress.

"Obviously it is self-inflicted as far as I'm concerned and we're going to Stevenage who haven't lost at home for two years so it is all stacked against us.

"I think we just have to go there and try and win the game and then you never know what can happen in football.

"You see last week between Burton and Cheltenham, there was an amazing turn-around there - but is going to be very difficult for us, that's for sure.

"We have got to make sure we don't concede early on, and nothing is impossible. We have 90 minutes football and we'll try and reverse the tie as best we can."

Kick-off tomorrow is 3:00pm at the Lamex Stadium.
