WEYMOUTH continued their perfect start to the Conference season at the expense of Harriers today, but even such a narrow score line flattered Garry Hill's side with the hosts being dominant almost from start to finish.
Chucki Eribenne's controversial penalty inside the first ten minutes will remain the only difference between the two sides in the record books after tonight, but nobody who witnessed today's game can argue that Harriers deserved much more than they got.
Mark Yates' men pulled out the kind of performance that had been asked of them in the last home game against St. Albans, but whereas the Saints richly deserved their victory some weeks ago, Weymouth will be heading home feeling lucky to have their 100% record intact.
With just six minutes on the clock, Harriers were pressing forward and Brian Smikle's persistence was rewarded when Abdul El Kholti was forced to concede a corner as the midfielder looked to ship in ball.
The visitors were awarded an extremely dubious penalty as Weymouth surged forward on their first attack, as Stuart Whithead was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area as he slid to intercept Lee Elam's cross.
Eribenne coolly put his side one goal to the good with a well struck penalty past Bevan.
Michael Blackwood ensured the visiting defence was wide awake when he thrashed a long-distance effort that rose just inches over the crossbar with the goalkeeper well beaten.
Aaran Lee-Barrett kept the scores the same with a quick-reaction save from Luke Reynolds header - the ball rolled out to Mark Creighton but he could only blaze his effort over the bar.
Simon Weatherstone had Weymouth's best chance of scoring from open play in the first half with a little over 30 minutes left on the clock, his low, swirling shot whizzed past the post.
Lee-Barrett produced another good save from Penn's header just before the break.
Into the second half and the hosts really began to put their foot on the gas as Gavin Gowan was first up in trying to beat the goalkeeper, his header from Jake Sedgemore's cross.
Even luck seemed to be deserting Harriers when four minutes into the second half, Lee-Barrett managed to palm away Reynolds shot despite a wicked deflection.
The former AFC Telford man must surely have thought he'd scored his second goal of the season just before the hour mark when, with Lee-Barrett out of his goal, he slipped in a low shot that seemed destined for the back of the net, only for substitute Tony James to clear off the line.
Dean Sturridge had two good chances thwarted by the goalkeeper late on in the game, his short-range shot from Andy White's flick header was held, as was the former Wolves' man's driven low effort.
Ironically in injury time Lee-Barrett finally was beaten as Penn thrashed what looked to be a rasping long-range drive out of nothing more than pure frustration. The 'keeper got nowhere near it but the home fans were denied the equalising goal as the effort thundered off the crossbar.
