James Constable was the hat-trick hero for Kidderminster Harriers today as they kicked their home 'hoodoo' into the dust, along with Exeter City's unbeaten start to the season.
Without hint of an exaggeration, this was probably the best home league performance Harriers have given for many, many years and not since Bo Henriksen did it at, ironically enough, Exeter City in 2003 has a Harriers found the back of the net three times in a game in the league - the last in any competition was Constable with his three-goal haul at Vauxhall in last season's FA Trophy.
Few will doubt Exeter's credentials as title challengers in the Blue Square Premier this season, but a fair few in the division will have been made to sit up and take notice of Mark Yates' troops after this afternoon's resounding result - two convincing wins and two cleans sheets and it seems the season is finally up and running.
City will be disappointed - they had the best of the opening 15 minutes or so as they looked lively going forward but after looking solid at the back, the hosts unleashed their own attack with devastating consequences.
Andy Ferrell blazed over with Harriers' first chance of the afternoon, this after Adam Stansfield had been denied by a wonder-tackle from skipper Stuart Whitehead.
With 28 minutes on the clock the scoring was opened - Justin Richards sailed through the City defence and goalkeeper and timed his shot well only to be denied by the foot of the post - the ball rolled out to CONSTABLE to smashed in a rocket of a re-bound.
Mark Creighton then hit a header over from a corner before Richards again came close to scoring - with 33 minutes gone the former Peterborough man beat the goalkeeper with his shot but saw a certain goal denied by Dean Moxey who cleared off the line.
A fantastically-worked move got Harriers' their second four minutes before the break as City struggled to cope, Jeff Kenna and Richards linked up well before Constable fired a quick cross onto the head of PENN who finished past Andy Marriot.
Four minutes after the re-start Constable was again chasing lost causes, he kept one ball in at the touchline and fired in a sweet cross for an unmarked Richards who just slightly mis-timed his header. Just after Penn had rattled the woodwork with a rasping volley, the hosts got their third on the hour mark after Harkness' perfectly-weighted ball found the head of CONSTABLE who'd sneaked past his man to beat Marriot.
It was four barely three minutes later - after getting a left-footed goal and a headed goal, CONSTABLE sealed the perfect hat-trick with a great right-footed finish, after he outmuscled his man and fired through the legs of the goalkeeper.
Exeter began to get more of the ball but still failed to do anything with it - sub Lee Elam fired one effort wide ten minutes before the end.
Bevan had very little to do all day but still pulled out a fantastic save from Stansfield after he burst into the area, a great one-handed stop from a decent effort.
