Harriers put in an ultra professional performance on Saturday as two late goals saw them through to the Second Round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy after they broke down a determined Matlock Town side at Causeway Lane.
It was never going to be a game won inside the first hour and credit must go to Mark Yates' men for the way they battled and went toe to toe with their UniBond League opposition. The side from Aggborough was one with several changes, both David McDermott and Dean Coleman missing out with sickness, Martin Riley suspended and on-loan pair Ryan Charles and Damian Spencer cup-tied. There was a rare start for Aaron Farrell up top whilst Jasbir Singh came in between the sticks.
It was a lively start from the visitors and inside five minutes Brian Smikle tested goalkeeper Aaron Jameson with a low effort, but after that the home side got to grips with the affair and began to defend resolutely, and Harriers were soon guilty of some wasteful play, Smikle and Knights linking up well on 17 minutes but not penetrating enough.
Either side of the hour mark both goalkeepers had to stay switched on - Gareth Davies' dangerous corner-kick for Matlock needed Singh to be strong and collect, whilst at the other end Gavin Caines saw a close-range effort ping off the foot of the post.
Five minutes from half time, Town's Ross Hannah would have wanted to do better with an effort he put some way over Singh's goal from a free-kick, whilst Nathan Hayward then had home stopper Jameson busy with a downward header.
Seven minutes into the second period Jameson was found flapping at a corner and almost paid the price as skipper Chris McPhee drove towards goal, the effort just over the target.
Ten minutes later Harriers had their first golden chance of the day - fantastic work from the lively Farrell out-wide saw Robbie Matthews played in on goal; the front man got the ball out from under his feet and chipped it over the goalkeeper, but also over the bar.
Some outstanding defending on 68 minutes prevented Matlock from breaking the deadlock - Hannah had been played in on goal and looked to curl one towards Singh's frame, Gavin Caines stopped him from doing so with a well-timed block.
As the home side started to flag a little, Harriers stepped it up a gear and strode ahead - Farrell was again causing all sorts of problems, his blocked shot saw the ball come out to Matthews who from more than 20 yards powered the ball past Jameson into the bottom corner of the net.

.....Robbie scores!
12 minutes from time, Matlock began to come forward a little more with the onus now on them - it took some good defending from both Singh and Danny Andrew to deny the lively Hannah.
With just seven minutes to go the breakaway combination of Farrell and Smikle almost saw Harriers grab a second - though they made sure of it with a repeated attack deep in injury time. As Farrell looked to finish for what would have been a deserved goal, he was crudely brought down by Jameson for a stonewalled penalty, which McPhee emphatically slotted home.

Job done, then. A solid and professional display eventually fully rewarded with goals. Harriers finally hit the back of the net and take a clean sheet, £5,000 in prize money and a place in Round Two back to Worcestershire tonight.
