Mark Yates has revealed his delight at the number of chances created by his forwards at Rushden on Monday and has called on them to keep them coming.

Harriers won by the single goal of the game at Nene Park but couldn't have been further in the ascendency as they had a huge amount of chances to increase their score.

The woodwork was rattled on more than one occasion and the likes of Russell Penn and front men Justin Richards and James Constable all impressed.

Substitute Iyseden Christie came on late in the game and could easily have added more goals to his account for the season.

It's all good, according to Harriers boss Yates who has today called on his attacking players to continue creating opportunities with Harriers next in action at home to Exeter at the weekend.

"The game could and should have been killed off long before we eventually won it," Yates told harriers.co.uk.

"At 1-0 your opponents always have a chance but, credit to the boys, they saw the game out superbly and the number of chances we created was extremely positive.

"I've got four quality strikers and you want it cause a problem every now and again because they all want to be playing but at the minute I'm only playing too, though that could change and I might play three.

"With better finishing, a number of lads could have had a hat-trick and we need to build on that, we need it to be the norm that we create that amount of chances."

Two wins and three defeats from five matches so far this season may not represent the best start to a campaign - nor is it the one Yates and Co. had in mind.

But with such a convincing win under their belts Yates has called on his troops to keep their focus as they enter a hugely vital month in September.

He added: "We're not too downhearted about the start of the season, it's not as been as encouraging as we would have liked; we would have liked to have won five out of five but that hasn't happened.

"We'll keep working hard on the training ground and we'll keep focused - we aren't out of anything yet and we have to build on Monday's performance and three points and make sure that we're in amongst the pack as soon as possible.

"We're a squad that's better equipped to produce the goods more often than not and we have to make sure that happens."
