Hurting Yates 'Forgives' Players
Whilst admitting that Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Woking will leave a 'sour taste', boss Mark Yates stated that the focus is now on making sure his squad are better equipped to challenge next season.
After being on a fantastic run of late, Harriers rounded-off the season in a poor fashion with this disappointing reverse at the Kingfield Stadium.
Yates apologised to another strong travelling contingent, and agreed that that the weekend's showing was hardly reflective of what the side have been about over recent times.
Speaking after the game, he said: "I'm gutted, and I apologise to the fans today because that isn't what we've been about for the last three months.
"They're all disappointed in the dressing room, and it just leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
"I've said to them that they've been magnificent the last few months, but we've set standards, and this wasn't good enough - we won't hide from that fact.
"But the bottom line is that it's the last game of the season, and we just have to bin it and move on, there's nothing we can do bar learn from what we didn't do today."
Yates was almost begrudgingly philosophical about the end of the campaign - clearly pained by such a lacklustre effort from his players, he admitted that his sole aim is now on preparing for next season.
"Today was just a bit of a lack of effort from too many players," he continued.
"I apologise to the supporters for the performance, but I have got to forgive the lads in a sense, even though it really hurts me.
"We have got to make sure we are better next season.
"I've learned things about my players - good and bad - and we have to make sure that next season we're more competitive.
"We've got to make decisions for the good of the football club that will take us forward."
