A philosophical Harriers boss Mark Yates admitted some disappointment to not opening the new season with a win against Lewes today but is determined to make it four points from six ahead of Tuesday's second game against Cambridge United.

Justin Richards got the home side off to a fine start with 22 minutes gone today - opening his account for the campaign with the first goal of the game.

But Harriers were far from at their sharpest throughout - and speaking after the game, Yates admitted he'll take a reflective look at the match video before reaching too many conclusions.

One thing was clear though - a measure of improvement is necessary as his side travel to meet Gary Brabin's United at the Trade Recruitment Stadium in just a few days time.

Of today's 1-1 draw, Yates said: "I don't know what to make of it at the moment really; I'll have a good look at the video.

"We created a lot of chances but more worryingly, we conceded a few chances.

"We've got to be better and we certainly will be.

"Over the last few years we've not done well on the opening day of the season and all I can say is that we're a point better off than we were this time last season.

"Give credit to Lewes - it's a big day in their history and they've come here and played well."

Dean Bennett's own goal just before the break ensured that the opening day's spoils were shared as Lewes deservedly travel back to Sussex with a point.

Keen to put this first contest to bed and move on, Yates went on to say of Cambridge: "I've seen they've had a win today and we know it's going to be tough.

"They've got a big playing budget and Gary, who I know well, has got some good players.

"They'll want three points against us but we've got to go there and win now,

"We've got to go with a positive attitude, be better without the ball and perform a bit better than we did today."

The Aggborough chief went on: "Nothing's been decided today - it's the first throw of the dice, the first little battle if you like and we've come out with honours even.

"We're disappointed but we have to move on - expectations are high for the first game and everyone wanted three points- it wasn't for a lack of effort."
