Boss Eyes Sunday Clash
AFTER picking up a third win in four games with last night's 1-0 win over Torquay, boss Mark Yates is eyeing a professional performance and another victory at Grays on Sunday.
Matthew Barnes-Homer's third goal of the season was enough to tackle the challenge of the Gulls at a soaked Aggborough in front of the Setanta cameras.
The win took Harriers up into the top ten of the Blue Square Premier and even for allowing for the results of an otherwise full league programme of fixtures tomorrow, the side have the chance to move further into the chasing back as they come up against Grays on Sunday afternoon (2:00pm).
The Essex outfit have been inflicting something close to torture on Harriers at the Recreation Ground since the Aggborough outfit came down from the Football League - a 2-2 draw in 2005-06 was as good as it got, as two seasons ago Yates' side were thumped 3-0, and then were beaten again last term as Danny Kedwell grabbed a hat-trick in a 5-1 romp for the home side.
Mick Woodward's outfit haven't made the best of starts to the new season though, and with Harriers full of confidence and in good form, the Manager and squad will travel down determined to pick up a victory.
"I went down to Crawley to watch (Grays) the other night because we haven't done particularly well down there previously and I don't want to be on the end of anything on Sunday," said Yates, after last night's win.
"I want to go down there, do a professional job and get another three points and get back on the bus.
"I saw one or two things that Grays do well but we have to keep our run going, we're four unbeaten now and we put in another good performance against Torquay - and there's belief in the dressing room and that's what matters."
Reflecting on the home victory over much-fancied Torquay, Yates admitted that his players improved after a slow start and were good value for the victory given to them by a brilliantly-worked goal - Martin Brittain's deadly cross being put home by Barnes-Homer.
He continued: "I didn't think we got out of the traps very well, I thought we were a bit sloppy and didn't play with the energy and the zest that we've had in the last couple of games.
"But that slowly came in the first half and it culminated in a fantastic goal; I thought the build-up play was great - there's not a better crosser of the ball in this division than Britt and Matthew was there in the right place.
"We had a couple of words at half-time, we just wanted to up our energy levels and we felt that if we did that, we could put the game out of sight.
"I thought we played some terrific stuff in the second half - the boys were outstanding, they dug in and limited a very good side to just a few half-chances."
