YATES: We Chased the Dream
Mark Yates insisted his players should only feel pride for their efforts over the season despite losing out on the play-offs on the final day.
Results elsewhere meant Harriers were just one victory away from a place in the top five but Kettering's 90th minute goal was enough to kill off all remaining hopes.
Despite that, Yates was keen to reflect positively on the season as a whole, and praise his team's efforts over the 50-plus game campaign.
"We had enough chances to have won the game - we had one headed off the line in the first minute and [their goalkeeper] has made saves early on," he said.
"That just sums it up really, we kept going but I'm gutted for the supporters and gutted for the players because they're down in there, like I knew they would be and as they should be.
"But they've done marvellously for the club this year - people are taking notice of us this season and I'm just disappointed for them that we didn't get the job done today because other results went our way."
Mansfield beating Stevenage meant Borough would've lost out had it been Harriers who'd found that goal in the dying seconds. Yates added: "That's the one that comes back and hurts the most.
"We needed three points today, we knew that. Kettering are a decent side and have the best defence in the league. We had enough chances and didn't take them and got caught on the break as we're trying to nick a goal.
"We chased the dream - we haven't quite made it but the players can be massively proud of themselves."
