BURR: We Tried to Attack

Posted on: Wed 17 Mar 2010

Manager Steve Burr was relatively upbeat in defeat after his Harriers side went down 3-1 at Luton Town's Kenilworth Road in the Blue Square Premier on Tuesday night.

James Lawrie's well-taken first goal for the club got Harriers back into the affair after two first-half goals from the hosts, before Richard Money's side went on to add to the score.

And whilst disappointed with the concession of the goals for varying reasons, Burr admitted he was pleased with much of what he saw on the night.

He told harriers.co.uk: "We spoke on Saturday about the score line being harsh and again tonight, we've had to change one or two things around and give people opportunities and I thought we did very well.

"We got ourselves back into the game at 2-1 after a couple of poor decisions from the referee - some you get, some you don't but I was just a bit disappointed, especially with the free-kick for their second goal.

"And then for their third goal we've given the ball away and they've gone on to score so that is very disappointing, sometimes it's down to concentration but I am learning more about the players.

"But Luton is a very difficult place to go - they're riding high in the division and have a very good crowd behind them.

"I thought we kept a good tempo to the game and we tried to attack them at every opportunity - there were some very good performances out there tonight."

Lawrie's first start produced a goal, and along with a rare start for Tom Sharpe in defence and a re-call for Robbie Matthews, there was a club debut for Jack Byrne in the centre of midfield.

The youngster was composed in both tackle and pass and can be pleased with his first outing, says Burr who was satisfied with the performances of all those coming into thye team.

"We know that this is exactly why we have brought Jack to the club," he added, of the ex-Redditch player.

"He's a young lad, he is learning the game and we very much feel he is one for the future.

"That was James' first start although he's been with us for a month, and that's through no fault of his own.

"But he started tonight and he took his goal very, very well. It was very pleasing for both of those lads and I though Robbie Matthews and Tom Sharpe did very well as well."

Up next for Harriers is a trip to Stevenage for the second leg of the FA Trophy semi-final tie.

5-1 down from the first leg, Burr concedes that progress is something of a long shot, but insists that the first priority must be to win the game on the day.

He said: "The aim is to try and win the match and we know that with the score as it stands, it is going to be difficult.

"But there are 90 minutes of football to be played... I would be more concerned if we weren't passing the ball and weren't creating chances but we are doing things and have just switched off at bad times to concede goals."
